We are at a greater risk of serious injury and falling as we age .

There are many factors that can increase our risk of falling. These include:

  • muscle weakness
  • Reduced mobility
  • diminished strength
  • balance problems
  • excess Weight
  • slower reflexes
  • vision changes

They could be caused by chronic illnesses or age-related changes. Side effects of some medications prescribed to older adults include dizziness and drowsiness. They can also cause syncope or impaired balance.

If you fall, the age-related weakness of your bones, muscles, joints and ligaments combined with a slower healing rate can have serious and even life-threatening consequences.

Improving Your Balance

Improving your balance is one of the best ways to avoid falling.

Standing behind a piece of sturdy furniture and holding on to it, you can try standing with one leg. Begin slowly and gradually increase your height. Have someone nearby who can help you if you are feeling unsteady.

Improving Your Strength

You can improve your muscle strength by doing a variety of exercises.

You don’t have to lift heavy weights in the gym. Strength can be built by doing activities like:

  • climbing stairs
  • pool exercises
  • yoga or tai chi
  • walking
  • resistance bands

You can improve your diet to ensure you get enough vitamins and minerals to keep your muscles and bones strong and healthy.

Improving Your Mobility

Try to get some physical activity in every day.

Walking around the neighborhood or at home is a good way to improve your health.

Ask your doctor or physical therapist for the best exercises if you are having difficulty with mobility.

Improving Your Surroundings

Making our environment as safe as we can is the best way to prevent falling.

  • Keep your floors clean and clutter-free
  • Ensure that carpets and floorboards are securely fastened
  • Make sure you have adequate lighting throughout your home
  • Install handrails at all staircases
  • Remove electrical cords in high traffic areas
  • Make sure that your stairs have good maintenance and handrails
  • You should have easy access to the things you need
  • Beds, couches, and chairs should be a comfortable height for getting in and out
  • Install grab bars in your bathroom and wherever else you may need them
  • Use slip-resistant mats for the shower or bathtub
  • Use a shower bench to help you balance or stand up

Keep your phone or emergency button nearby if you need assistance after a fall.

By making these changes, you and your guests will feel more secure and confident in your home.

Even in the most secure of homes, falls can happen. You should seek immediate medical attention if you fall. You may not feel injured, but you might have an injury that isn’t immediately obvious or one that won’t heal on its own.
